Mekanism HR

Mekanism is rapidly growing, and in an attempt to appear professional, we’ve hired an HR person (Hi Stacy! Welcome!).  Mekanism has always been a fairly casual workplace, so this is a big change for us.  A change that comes with equal parts excitement and uncertainty.  On the one hand, I look forward to having a person who can finally answer important questions like, “What is health insurance and do I have it?” and, “So… does this mean I’m fired?” On the other hand, I’m uncertain about how this might affect the day-to-day operations of Mekanism, and I’m left with a lot of questions. Questions like:

  • What is going to happen to our extensive collection of vintage pornography?

  • Is poorly comp’ing your co-worker’s face onto photographs of semi-nude celebrities OK?

  • Is inquiring about, and then aggressively critiquing your co-workers sex life, an “egregious invasion of privacy,” or just good leadership?

  • Are drinking and lighting things on fire in the desert considered outside the realms of “Team Building?”

  • Challenging colleagues to solicit adult photos from strangers on Snapchat- Company culture, or gross misconduct?

  • Does watching Vine videos of people twerking, for hours on end, still count as research on “emerging media”?

  • Licking people’s personal items while they’re away on vacation. – Cool or no?

  • Is it inappropriate to start an online relationship with a co-worker’s mother, in an attempt to be that co-worker’s step-father?

  • Legally, can we require all employees to wear a leotards for extended periods while filming the company Christmas video?

  • Can we even say Christmas, or is the correct term, “holiday video?”

As you can see, there are a lot of concerns to be addressed, but I’m not worried. I’m confident that we will work together as a team to build a work environment that continues to be a comfortable and safe space for everyone. As we continue to grow as a company, I look forward to welcoming each new employee with open arms – starting with our newest addition to the Mekansim team, HR Manger, Stacy Frost. Now let’s black out.
